About Gallery 71

What you will find at Gallery 71

Our ground floor is a dedicated arts and crafts charity shop.

You’ll find art supplies, craft materials, stationery, and creative resources available to buy. Many items are brand new, and every purchase helps fund Phoenix WoMen’s Aid vital support services.

Along the walls, you’ll also see artwork donated by local artists and survivors, all available to purchase, with 100% of funds going directly to the charity.

This space is designed to be used, not just visited.

Creatives are welcome to come in, sit down, and spend time here. To paint. To write. To create. Or simply to sit quietly and work on a jigsaw.

A small refreshment offering will also be available, making it a welcoming place to pause, connect, or simply breathe.

Permanent Domestic Abuse Exhibition

The upper floor is a permanent domestic abuse art exhibition.

This exhibition features artwork created by victims and survivors of domestic abuse who work with, volunteer for, or are currently supported by Phoenix.

The pieces are honest, emotive, and deeply personal.

They tell stories that don’t always have words. These items are not for sale.

Why '71'?

The number 71 holds powerful meaning.

In 1971, the first women’s refuge in the UK was opened by Erin Pizzey. It marked a turning point. A moment when silence was broken and safety was created for women and children fleeing abuse.

Phoenix Gallery 71 exists in honour of that legacy.

It recognises the courage of those who came before us. The women who refused to accept abuse as inevitable. And the survivors today who continue to rise, rebuild, and reclaim their voices.

Just like the Phoenix, this gallery represents resilience, rebirth, and hope after devastation.

Every step forward is built on the bravery of 1971, and every piece of art here carries that same spirit forward.
